The kitchen at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is going gourmet with the help of a celebrity chef.
The Food Network's Corbin Tomaszeski, famous for appearances on shows like Dinner Party Wars and Restaurant Makeover, was taking over the hospital's kitchen Friday to prepare a four-course gourmet meal in support of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.
The menu for the dinner was filled with food like pickerel, bison and elk and also included a vegetarian option.
Tomaszeski scoped out the kitchen Thursday and was impressed with the hospital's culinary team. "They were, I think, a little intimidated because this is out of their comfort zone. I went in there and I had them like putty in my hands," he said. "There's a stigma attached to hospital food and here in Thunder Bay, I have to tell you, pleasantly surprised. It's not what most people have in hospitals," he said. "They do have the green Jell-o, which everyone should have."
The proceeds from the dinner will be used to purchase new dialysis machines for the hospital's renal unit and Tomaszeski said charities that support local causes are what he finds most important. "We are surrounded by volunteers. We are surrounded by community and that's the type of thing that kind of formulates success when it comes to charity," he said. "It's the people that give the time. It's the people that give the hours. It's the people who care that really give the momentum on an event like this."
Tomaszeski said cooking for events like this fall into his personal mantra. "The great thing about food and I learned this at a very early age, which is the reason I got into cooking to begin with, is that food, when you make it, brings people together," he said.
