Got a spare $100 and a hankering for the open road?
If you do, the folks at Our Kids Count have an offer for you.
The MacKenzie Street organization on Thursday launched the ninth annual Motors and Muscles draw, the grand prize a 2014 Harley-Davidson Classic FXSB worth $29,114.
Proceeds from the draw, being held on Aug. 24, 2014 in conjunction with Rib Fest, will support Our Kids Count’s kitchen programs, said executive director Gladys Berringer. “We have really made our focus on food and food security and cooking,” Berringer said. “We run a huge number of kitchens that we offer to all people. Anyone can come and participate in the kitchens. The funds are allowing us to do that year-round. “In the past we had to have small layoffs of shorten the programs that were being offered through the summer.”
The organization offers a dozen different programs, ranging from community kitchens and parenting support groups to life skills and a family counsellor.
Vlad Popescu, a board member at Our Kids Count and part of the fundraising development committee, said the draw is incredibly important for the organization each year. “Without this community support, without these funds, Our Kids Count would not be able to continue to be able to do what they do. Even though there is government funding, should that government funding go away next year, Our Kids Count would not be able to do what we do.”
Only 650 tickets are being sold and can be purchased at Our Kids Count, Halfway Motors, the Harley-Davidson store, Canadian Tire’s Thunder Centre location and the OLG Casino.
