Jordan Richards estimates she's seen the movie The Croods about a million times.
But over the next 40 days, the nine-year-old fourth-grader from St. Paul School is determined to forgo her favourite film for Lent. Meanwhile, Aiden Dougherty, a 10-year-old Grade 5 student, is ready to give up his beloved chips.
Before the young Catholics kick their habits though, they get one last shot at excess with the always delicious Shrove Tuesday.
The school took over the Current River Community Centre Tuesday morning, serving up all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausages to 163 kids.
St. Paul parent council president Samantha Duke-Richards, who is giving up chocolate, said it takes about 20 parent volunteers a month to get everything together in time, from dividing up the workload to the great cook-off that starts early Tuesday. But the hard work is worth it in the end.
\"It's just bringing the community together," she said. "It's really exciting."
Aiden said it's also pretty fun. He and his class hold contests to see who can eat the most pancakes.
The winner can eat around 10 pancakes, taking home bragging rights. "That's usually not me," he said.
Jordan said the day is all about having a good time and is a welcome break from school work. "You can go and talk to all of your friends," she said.
