THUNDER BAY -- The city of Windsor has used its official plan to prevent crime.
It's been done by keeping Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design in mind. Everything from lighting to how infrastructure is built can make a place more open and ultimately safer.
Windsor Police Service planning and physical resources director Barry Horrobin, in Thunder Bay to teach a workshop on the concept, said it's gone a long way to deter crime in his city. "There are significant examples of where crime and disorder have dropped," he said.
It took a lot of work with various departments in Windsor from parks to transit to get the principles adopted. "It didn't happen overnight, it took a lot of years," Horrobin said.
Crime prevention council chair Tom Walters said it's something he'd like to see Thunder Bay take on, part of the reason the council and Thunder Bay Police Service' Zone Watch had Horrobin come to the city.
It fits in well with the crime prevention council's strategy of getting people to take back spaces in their neighbourhoods and making them safer. "I would really like to make a recommendation from our end of things that we look at how could these principles be applied in the city plan," he said.
Const. Julie Tilbury said officers are always looking to make the community safer. Environmental design can bring more people to a public space and make it safer for everyone. "I think it's just a natural fit with what we do day-to-day," she said.
