Holiday weekend

THUNDER BAY -- In this area the August holiday has become synonymous with warm weather and a relaxing long weekend. For many, that also means celebrating with a fireworks display. Debbie Groombridge of Pyro Boyz says that while Canada Day is still the busiest time of the summer, the August civic holiday weekend brings in quite a large number of sales. The most typical August long weekend customer, Groombridge said, was one that purchases a large quantity for a big group. One such customer is Peter DeBoer, who four years ago started an annual tradition by hosting a fireworks show for family and friends. All of those attending pitch in to help enhance the quality of the fireworks, which led to him having nearly $1,500 to spend on pyrotechnics this year. Having the fireworks is the centrepiece towards having a gathering. “They like watching them and I like that it brings everyone together. Everyone likes a good fireworks show,” he said. Groombridge says all customers are given detailed safety instructions when fireworks are purchased. She cautioned that they are not to be set off in hand and should be secured before lighting. A fireworks show is only legally if being set either by or with consent of the property owner.
