When the 1969 Pontiac Firebird first hit the sales floor, it cost $3,045.
Forty-four years later someone in Thunder Bay can get one for as low as $15.
On Tuesday the Thunder Bay Museum launched its seventh biennial Classic Car Raffle, a major fundraiser that helps with day-to-day operational costs and capital projects at the century-old south-side facility. “We have a lot of work to do,” said Tina Bucknell, the museum’s first vice-president. “There’s programming, recreation, more buildings, a lot of things. We like to keep the museum going. That’s why we raise money. “Our museum is already 100 years old and let’s hope we have another 100 years.
The sleek-looking verdoro green Firebird, which has less than 75,000 miles on the odometer, appears just like it did when it first rolled onto the dealer’s lot from the Ohio factory, one of just 11,649 convertible models ever made.
Highlights on the include custom-knit vinyl weave bucket seats, a 350 cid V-8 engine, 265 horsepower and dual exhaust.
For old-timers, the stereo system is a blast from the past, an AM/FM stereo with cassette, and dual rear speakers to make one’s presence known.
Tickets are $15 apiece, two for $20 or five for $40, and are available at Intercity Shopping Centre, Canadian Tire and the museum itself.
