It’s a case of one charity helping another.
On Wednesday staff at the George Jeffrey Children’s Centre handed over a van-load of food and a cheque for $565 to the Regional Food Distribution Association.
Mary Anne Comuzzi, executive director of the centre’s charitable foundation, said she received a letter from the RFDA seeking donations, brought it to the staff and the next thing she knew a campaign was on.
“The staff embraced it. They started doing some initiatives in the centre to raise some funds and they kept bringing food in,” Comuzzi said.
“Then clients and friends jumped on board. We had board members who got on board. But it was an initiative that lots of families who come through our centre possibly use our services, so we thought it was a good fit.”
The RFDA’s Volker Kromm said donation came as a bit of a surprise.
“It really is quite a good fit because we both serve children. And it was great timing, because when we’re struggling to feed enough children and families and singles, this is something we really appreciate,” Kromm said.
He added with an influx of residents from outlying regions looking for better lives for themselves and their children the timing is perfect.
