Former soldiers who gave their lives in Second World War were honoured during a Sunday march.
Every year, the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment participates in anniversary parade to commemorate the June 1940 mobilization of the Lake Superior Regiment Motor for World War II.
During the First World War the unit fought as the 52nd Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force, and in the Second World War as a mechanized infantry unit with the title of the Lake Superior Regiment Motor.
The LSSR and the family members of the Lake Superior Regiment spent the morning at Hillcrest Park honouring former members who served more than 100 years of the regiment’s existence.
“For a military unit, it’s important to have a sense of belonging, a sense of history and tradition and it honours those who did the same thing we’re doing, serving our country,” said Lieutenant-Colonel David Ratz.
The parade commemorated the 775 lost in the Second World War and the 3,000 casualties in the First World War.
Ratz explained there are few veterans alive today from the Second World War and unfortunately there are none from the First World War.
Canadian soldiers played a significant role in the Second World War, Ratz said adding that “if you think about the D-Day invasions on June the 6th we had one-fifth of the whole invasion was ours.”
“Canada produced over 1-million men and women in uniform in the Second World War so they were quite significant.”
Since the Second World War the regiment’s soldiers have served on many peacekeeping operations throughout the world.
Most recently, the LSSR has had several soldiers serve in Afghanistan.
