Six-year-old friends Devon and Riley were three reallys worth of excited for the annual East End Easter Egg Hunt on Good Friday. This Friday was the 18th annual egg hunt at Frank Charry Park and it was the first time for Devon, who along with her friend Riley was excited to go looking for eggs in the baseball diamond when their age group was called. “It’s fun because you get to find Easter eggs in the snow,” she said. Seven-year-old Liam was also excited to hunt for eggs along with Kyla, 7, who already had a strategy in mind. “Run really fast,” she said. Despite there being more than 1,500 children and their families in the park Friday at noon, Hill City Kinsmen treasurer Rob Dubinsky said it seemed a little quiet. But that didn’t last long once the kids heard the go signal and starting scrambling around the field for eggs. “This year we have close to 10,000 eggs stuffed out in the field and probably 350 pounds of treats for the kids,” Dubinsky said. The Kinsmen and Kinette clubs of Thunder Bay took over the holiday event in 2009 when it was in danger of being cancelled. Originated by the Simpson Street BIA 18 years ago, the organization didn’t have enough volunteers five years ago to keep it going. That’s when the Kinsmen and Kinettes stepped in. Dubinsky said it’s one event they want to see continue. “It’s an important one for the area, especially because it was hard hit with the flood,” he said.
