Filling up

A pair of new ambulances will help hundreds in the city over the coming months. St. John Ambulance received two new vehicles three weeks ago. They decided the first trip for the two new vehicles should be a food drive outside of Thunder Bay Metro Stores. On Saturday St. John volunteers were in front of the ambulances asking shoppers to fill the vehicles with food for the St. Thomas Anglican Church food bank. “The main goal really is to fill them to capacity,” St. John executive director Diana Sustawenko said. St. Thomas’ Janis Barker has been running the church food bank for two years now. In that time she has seen the need triple. The food bank, which is open twice a month, usually relies on parishioners to fill the cupboards. Getting the whole community to help will make sure around 100 people a month in Westfort have food for the next eight months. “This is amazing, just amazing,” she said. “To get this kind of help.” “We’ve never had this happen before.” The food bank will also share food from the fill-an-ambulance campaign with other Anglican churches in the city.
