THUNDER BAY -- Mail carriers have the pulse on the communities they serve.
After all, they spend their work days on the streets going door to door. That’s why a group of local Canada Post workers are doing their part to help the community. “We see the whole city and we’re at every place, every day," said letter carrier Cathy Stojkovic. "We really like getting involved in our town. A lot of people need a lot of help. More and more children are needing help in our community.”
For the fifth straight year, local posties will be collecting food donations for the Regional Food Distribution Association for their Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
A bright green flyer will be delivered this week by a Canada Post carrier to every home and apartment in the city.
The flier can then be attached to a bag of food donations and placed by their mailbox to be picked up on Saturday.
Last year’s edition of the food drive raised seven tonnes of food for the RFDA.
It comes during a time of the year when the RFDA warehouse begins to get depleted, says executive director Volker Kromm. “It’s very timely because at this time of year we are getting fairly low. We are starting to get a little sparse. This comes at a time when we do need a little extra boost to our food supply so we can feed our 45 members,” Kromm said.
The food drive hasn’t been the only way postal workers have supported the regional food bank.
Carriers have also been selling cookbooks for the past two years, which has allowed them to purchase a meat slicer to donate to the RFDA.
